Watch Out Below: Cables and Equipment on the Seafloor

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) has cables and scientific equipment on the seafloor in Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound that collect real-time data. Google also has two telecommunication cables running through the same area.

It’s important to know where these cables and infrastructure are located. If fishing gear gets tangled and accidentally hauls them up, it can be extremely dangerous for you and your crew.

Be sure to check the maps before setting gear or anchoring in Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound. Knowing where these cables are can save you time, money and keep everyone safe.

Other coastal areas around Vancouver Island and Northern BC have cables and underwater infrastructure to be aware of also. Always check local maps or notices before heading out.

If you have questions or concerns, ONC has a hotline you can reach out to.
