Dive Training requirements For Dive Fishing
Background: This
is covered by the WCB in part 24 of the Occupational Health and
Safety Regulations 24.12 & 24.13 which states:
24.12 Training
(1) A diver
must not dive unless the diver has been thoroughly trained in
the theory and use of the diving apparatus that the diver will
be using.
(2) The training
required by subsection (1) must be provided by a person or agency
acceptable to the board.
(3) All divers,
diving supervisors and divers' tenders must be trained in CPR,
oxygen (O2) therapy, and diving accident management.
24.13 Evidence of competency
(1) The employer
and diving supervisor must ensure that all divers
(a)
meet the minimum requirements of CSA Standard Z275.4-97 Competency
Standard for Diving Operations or other standard acceptable
to the board, and
(b)
are competent to use the diving equipment that will be used in
the diving operation.
(2) A certified
copy of competency documents for each diver must be available
for inspection on site by an officer.
What does this mean?

If you hold a Seafood Harvesters
Certificate and dive within any restrictions on the certificate
you do not need the CSA qualified courses.

If you do not have a Seafood
Harvesters Certificate you must obtain CSA qualified training
applicable to the equipment type you plan to dive with.

With either the Seafood Harvesters
Certificate or CSA Qualified Certificate you must have training
in the equipment you use and all divers, diving supervisors
and divers' tenders must be trained in CPR, oxygen (O2) therapy,
and diving accident management.

Copies of all certificates
must be kept up to date and with you on the boat for review
by any WCB officer.
